Anna Hazare joins indefinte hunger strike at Jantar Mantar

July 29, 2012 - New Delhi

Huge crowds arrived at the Jantar Mantar venue as veteran activist Anna Hazare began his fast-undo-death fast. Gandhian Hazare joined Team Anna in the protests who are demanding an independent probe on the 15 ministers who are facing allegations of corruption. Despite repeated appeals from the Team Anna members not to join the fast considering his health, Hazare decided to join the protest anyway. Around 50 students from prestigious educational institutions around the country joined the protests.

More than hundred activists of the 'India Against Corruption' were arrested in Chennai for protesting outside Home Minister P Chidambaram's residence. About 15 of Anna's supporters were hospitalized since the fast began.

Team Anna members Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai are already sitting on the indefinite fast. After joining the hunger strike, Anna Hazare said: "We are starting our fast from today and it will continue. The government is alleging that we are deviating from our aim but it is the government which is moving away from its path. Our main demand is to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed. Till all the 15 corrupt ministers are sitting in Parliament, the Lokpal Bill will not be passed. I am ready to sacrifice my life for the cause,"

Tests to check blood pressure, weight and pulse rate were performed on Hazare before he joined the strike. This is Hazare's fourth indefinite hunger strike since April 2011.
