Talks with ULFA significant: Chidambaram

March 1, 2011 - New Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 1 Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said that peace talks with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) held here last month were very significant.

Addressing the media here after releasing his ministry's monthly report, Chidambaram said: "One of the significant developments during the month was the commencement of formal talks with ULFA. On February 10 ULFA leaders called on me and, subsequently, on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh."

Chidambaram said talks were going on with nine insurgent groups in the northeast.

"We hope to reach agreement with some of them this year," he added.
