June 9, 2011 - New Delhi

Union Minister of Culture and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has condoled the demise of M. F. Husain, saying India has lost a true artistic genius and the world of art has suffered a grievous loss.

In her message, Selja said: "I received the news of sudden demise of M.F. Husain with sorrow. As a true citizen of the world and as a restless creative soul and an eternal traveler, Husain was among the pioneers who spread the message of India's art across the globe."

"He has been a prominent contemporary painter and the nation has honoured him with the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. In his death today, India has lost a true artistic genius and the world of art has suffered a grievous loss. His contribution will always be remembered," she added.

M F Husain, who earned both fame and wrath for his paintings, breathed his last at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London early this morning.

He was popularly known as MF and regarded as "Picasso of India".
