Sathya Sai Baba's last rites being performed in Puttaparthi

April 27, 2011 - Puttaparthi

Spiritual guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba's last rites are taking place at the Prashanti Nilayam ashram in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, today.

The final rituals started at 9a.m. at the ashram's Sai Kulwant Hall, and will conclude by 10.30am.

The Baba will be buried in line with the practice adopted for spiritual leaders in India, contrary to the Hindu custom of cremating bodies.

The ceremony is not open to the general public. Only family members, some members of the Prashanti Nilayam Trust and some important leaders were inside the hall.

Once the burial ends, the public will be allowed to visit the hall again.

Sathya Sai Baba, who was admitted to the super-speciality hospital in Puttaparthi on March 28, passed away following cardio-respiratory failure on Sunday morning. He was 85.

His body had been wrapped in a saffron-coloured cloth and kept in a glass casket in the hall to enable ten of thousands of devotees from all over the world to pay their last respects.
