Ramdev eviction: Team Anna on fast at Rajghat

June 8, 2011 - New Delhi

Gandhian Anna Hazare and his supporters will hold a day-long fast at Rajghat here today from 10.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. to protest against the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his followers at the Ramlila Maidan ground on Saturday night.

They initially wanted to protest at Jantar Mantar, but Delhi police denied them permission for this citing law and order concerns.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been in place at Jantar Mantar after Saturday's incident at Baba Ramdev's camp at the Ramlila grounds.

RTI crusader Arvind Kejriwal, a key figure in Hazare's campaign against corruption, said: "We want to have a peaceful day of prayer and fasting. The whole day, we will be prayers and in the evening there will be a consultation with the people present at the fast on the Lokpal Bill."

"It's a people's movement where you give out a call and people show up. Everyone's angry about corruption and everyone is angry about the kind of atrocities that the government commited on Saturday night. It was almost an attack on democracy," he said

"This fast is not a challenge to anyone. It's a challenge to the system, injustice and corruption. It's an assertion of our fundamental right. Article 19, 1B gives me the fundamental right to assemble peacefully and protest. The Government says we will not allow you to do that. So this is an assertion of our fundamental rights and we will do it. We are ready to face the consequences," he added.
