PM must clarify Chidambaram's alleged favours to former client: BJP

December 20, 2011 - New Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday demanded that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh must clarify Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram's alleged involvement in favouring a former client.

"Our demand is that the Union Home Minister's action in giving permission for withdrawal of the cases in S P Gupta episode should be clarified by the Honourable Prime Minister. He should come to the House and explain to the house how it has happened. Then what action is he taking on the conflict of interest of the Union Home Minister," said senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Meanwhile, another BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said that the Rajya Sabha was adjourned, as there was uproar in the Parliament regarding Chidambaram's involvement in several scams.

"The Rajya Sabha was adjourned over the issue regarding the resignation of Chidambaram till 2 p.m. because this issue which has come up is the withdrawal of cases involving Gupta will not bear any fruit, the issue is a wrong order by the Home Minister regarding withdrawal of legal cases concerning persons related to commercial activities," said Javadekar.

Chidambaram, who is already neck-deep in trouble over his alleged involvement in the 2G scam, is now facing fresh allegations of misusing his power to direct the Delhi Police to withdraw criminal proceedings against a Delhi-based hotelier.
