PDP accuses Omar Abdullah Govt. of being involved in corruption

October 24, 2011 - Srinagar

The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) staged a protest here on Monday and levelled charges of corruption against the ruling National Conference (NC) Government and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Scores of PDP protestors took to the streets here and shouted slogans against the Omar Abdullah Government.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti earlier in the day said Jammu and Kashmir was also ravaged by the plague of corruption like other parts of the country, and pleaded the Central Government to taker stern action in this matter.

"When it comes to Jammu and Kashmir and the corruption in the state, where recently a close family associate of the National Conference exposed the government and revealed the level of corruption in this government and this family (Abdullah family), then why are the people of the country and the Central Government in Delhi silent? Why do they want to destroy the people and set ups of our state?" said Mufti.

"When there is robbery in elections, people in Delhi were silent, people were killed here on roads, and people in Delhi were silent. And now corruption, which is the raging issue in the country, it is an issue of Jammu and Kashmir as well. The funds allocated by the Central Government goes in the pockets of a certain group and state government. The local Kashmiri doesn't get anything," she added.

Omar Abdullah is facing a political storm over the death of National Conference (NC) worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf, who died allegedly in police custody after two fellow party workers had accused him of taking Rs 1.18 crore from them for getting them berths in the Legislative Council.

According to the government version, the accused was summoned to the camp office of the chief minister where he was confronted with the allegation about taking money.
