Nation pays homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

December 6, 2011 - New Delhi

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil led the nation in paying homage to Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 56th Mahaparinirvan Diwas here today.

President Patil offered floral tributes at the statue of Baba Saheb at Sansad Bhavan Lawns in the Parliament House complex this morning.

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also offered tributes to the Father of the Indian Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar.

Among other leaders, who paid floral homage to Baba Saheb included Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde and Minister of State, Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napolean.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran L.K Advani also paid floral tributes to Dr. Ambedkar.

The function was organised by the Ambedkar Foundation, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar popularly also known as Babasaheb, was an Indian jurist, political leader, philosopher, thinker, anthropologist, historian, orator, prolific writer, economist, scholar, editor, a revolutionary and one of the founding fathers of independent India. He was also the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of Indian Constitution.

Dr. Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1990.
