MNS demands Kalmadi's resignation as Pune MP

April 27, 2011 - Pune

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists staged a demonstration outside the house of sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi's here on Wednesday demanding his resignation as an MP representing their city.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also been demanding Kalmadi's resignation, saying he has no moral right to continue as the people's representative from Pune after his removal from the secretaryship of Congress Parliamentary Party in the wake of allegations of corruption involving the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam.

Condemning Kalmadi's illegal acts, Vikas Matkari, a local functionary of the BJP, on Tuesday said that he has no legal or moral right to continue the position as a parliamentarian as such he should resign immediately.

Kalmadi was suspended from Congress Party hours after his arrest on Monday on charges of manipulating the award of contracts for the sporting extravaganza of 2010.

A Delhi court had on Tuesday sent Kalmadi to police custody for eight days.

The CBI had earlier asked Kalmadi to appear before it on Monday to clarify some new issues, which surfaced during the visit of the agency's officials to London in connection with Queen's Baton Relay scam.

Kalmadi had earlier expressed his inability to appear before the CBI citing his foreign visit, saying he would return home only after April 19. But even after returning from his visit abroad, he did not turn up before the sleuths, saying he was still not in Delhi, sources said.

Kalmadi has been accused of sanctioning payments to AM Films and AM Car at rates that were hugely inflated.
