KBR and Jindal Steel & Power Limited Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Provide KBR’s TRIG™ Solution for Direct Reduction Iron Projects

June 16, 2011 - New Delhi, Delhi, India

KBR (NYSE: KBR) today announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) under which the companies are in discussions regarding the implementation of KBR’s Transport Integrated Gasification technology (TRIG™) for JSPL’s Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) projects. The companies are also in discussions to implement TRIG™ for coal-to-liquids (CTL) applications.

TRIG™ is an efficient and reliable clean coal technology that will allow JSPL to maximize the value of abundant high ash coal reserves in India that would otherwise be uneconomic to develop. The simple patented technology produces quality synthesis gas with ultra-low emissions and low wastewater discharge, making it a viable option for DRI systems in the country. Once on stream, TRIG™ is capable of producing clean, high-quality coal-based direct reduced iron at a relatively low cost to meet the increased demand for steel in one of the most populous regions in the world.

The companies are also exploring the use of TRIG™ technology’s commercial implementation with the goal of producing CTL. Because TRIG™ requires lower amounts of water to process coal, the technology is effective in an area such as India where water is less accessible for industry utilization.

“KBR’s Technology business is focused on providing adaptable, effective solutions for our global clients’ unique challenges,” said John Derbyshire, President, KBR Technology. “Our TRIG™ technology is a solution that we are confident would meet both JSPL’s technology requirements and the end-product needs of the region. We look forward to ongoing, successful discussions with JSPL for both DRI and CTL applications of TRIG™.”
