India welcomes Fatah-Hamas reconciliation

May 6, 2011 - New Delhi

India on Friday welcomed the reconciliation deal between the two leading Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hamas, to set up a transitional unity government and hold elections.

"The Government of India welcomes the reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas which ends the differences between the West Bank and Gaza and hopes that this would promote the realization of the aspirations of the Palestinian people, and leads to peace and stability in the region," a Ministry of External Affairs statement said.

After a bloody four-year rivalry, the two Palestinian factions signed an Egyptian-brokered reconciliation accord at a ceremony in Cairo on Wednesday.

The two sides hope to hold elections within a year.
