Geelani's shutdown call hits normal life in Jammu and Kashmir

June 11, 2011 - Srinagar

Normal life in Jammu and Kashmir was affected on Saturday due to a shutdown call given by Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani in memory of youths who were killed in clashes between locals and security forces in 2010.

Shops, business establishments and government offices remained closed, while buses and other means of transportation were off the roads.

Security officials of the paramilitary forces were seen patrolling market areas.

No reports of violence were reported.

In 2010, the Kashmir valley was rocked by a series of shutdown calls given by separatist elements and violence of attacks on security personnel by stone-pelting locals, resulting in death of at least 110 people.
