Congress Working Committee to discuss Lokpal issue

June 24, 2011 - New Delhi

Ahead of an all-party meeting on July 3 to debate the controversial Lokpal Bill, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), will meet here today to deliberate over the party's future course of action.

The CWC, which will be addressed by Party President Sonia Gandhi, is expected to endorse the government's position on the Lokpal Bill.

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, chairperson of the joint Lokpal Bill drafting committee, is expected to brief the CWC on the two Bills, the one drafted by the government and the other by the civil society representatives.

Apart from the Lokpal Bill, the CWC might discuss the way in which the government has tackled the Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare issues, the reported bugging of Pranab Mukherjee's office and the evolving situation in Uttar Pradesh.

This will be the first formal meeting of the apex policy making body to take stock of the political situation after the CWC was reconstituted in March.

The meeting comes at a time when the party is under attack from a belligerent Opposition and sections of civil society over corruption.
