BJP demands Sheila Dikshit's resignation over 2010 CWG scam

August 12, 2011 - New Delhi

Senior leaders and activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a protest in New Delhi today demanding the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit over her alleged involvement in the multi-billion dollar 2010 Commonwealth Games scam.

BJP's Delhi President Vijendra Gupta said that the protests would continue until Dikshit resigns from her post.

"Based on the findings by the CAG report, all members of the party at municipality level have carried out a protest here and demanded that Sheila Dikshit should demit the office of Chief Minister and CBI enquiry be carried out," Gupta said.

Senior leader Vijay Goel said that Dikshit should be in jail along with former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi, who is presently in judicial custody after he was charged for indulging in corrupt practices like sanctioning tenders such as the timing equipment worth millions of dollars.

"Despite being indicted by three reports, Sheila Dikshit continues to be outside jail. Suresh Kalmadi is in jail while Sheila Dikshit outside. BJP is demanding CBI probe into the matter," Goel said.

The protest came days after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report indicted Dikshit on the irregularities observed in the Games' preparations.

The report has slammed Dikshit for overseeing "ill-conceived and ill-planned" projects and unduly favouring certain firms for contracts.

The CAG also held Dikshit responsible for the wasteful expenditure to the tune of several hundred million rupees.

Dikshit, however, has denied any wrongdoing.
