Assam students protest attack on activists

December 29, 2011 - Guwahati

Members of the All Assam Students Union carried out a torch march against the Assam government to condemn the recent police action on activists who were opposing construction of dams in the state.

Protesters rallied on the streets and shouted slogans against the state government.

"The Government of Assam led by Tarun Gogoi ordered a baton charge on activists protesting against construction of the dam. We condemn this attack and demand Gogoi to stop this construction," said All Assam Students Union, General Secretary, Tapan Gogoi.

Activists in Assam's Lakhimpur District had become victims of police atrocities for protesting against the construction of hydel power project by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

The protestors asserted that the construction of mega dams in Assam would have serious repercussions on the lives of people living downstream.

The 2000-MW Lower Subansiri Hydel Project constructed by NHPC at Gerukamukh, is facing massive opposition from student outfit and ethnic bodies in Assam.
