Campaign on crop rotation at Chhattisgarh

The authorities launched an awareness campaign about crop rotation in Mahasamundara district so that the water table might be maintained.

Mahasamundara (Chhattisgarh), Nov 10 : The authorities launched an awareness campaign about crop rotation in Mahasamundara district so that the water table might be maintained.

Growing the same crop continuously over the years leads to depletion of ground water level. We have a large number of tube wells in this area and Rabi cereal crops are cultivated in twenty to twenty thousand hectares. Consequently, the rate of consumption of water is high and depletion of the water table is very swift," said Vikas Mishra, Assistant Coordinator, Agriculture department.

Called Rabi Chetna Rath i.e. 'awareness chariot', the campaign has been initiated by district administration.

"We are being encouraged to cultivate pulses and oilseeds. Village folk take what officials say as beneficial as it will help in maintain the water table" said Prakash Chandrakar a farmer.

The campaign aims at bringing more and more farmers in to the crop rotation net.early 70 percent of India's billion-plus population depends on agriculture, which accounts for about a quarter of its GDP.
