Ranchi doctors remove a six feet long iron rod from a childs abdomen

Six-year-old Mehul got a new lease of life on Holi this year, when a team of doctors successfully operated upon him to remove a 6-feet long iron rod from his abdomen on Wednesday.

Mehul had fallen from the terrace of his house while playing and the rod that was protruding went though his chest and came out of the abdomen.

However, the boy miraculously survived as the doctors of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi conducted the four-hour-long surgery, whereupon they successfully removed the rod from Mehul's body .

"When the child was brought to us he had lost a lot of blood. Within 15 minutes we did an x-ray and other tests and when we slit open his abdomen, we discovered, the rod had passed through his chest. We discovered his liver and stomach was injured, but thankfully, the spleen and pancreas were safe. The child was lucky that he did not suffer any major injury but he had substantial injuries It was life threatening injury," said Sandeep Aggarwal, Surgeon at the hospital.

It is not an isolated incident where doctors have saved patients from such life threatening injuries.

In October last year, the doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) had saved a 22-year-old man by removing a metal rod stuck in his chest, which created rupture in his heart at two places.

In another incident, a 21-year-old construction worker was successfully operated upon by team of doctors in Pune to remove a six-feet iron pole which had pierced into his body through the shoulder and abdomen before coming out from the left thigh. by Girija Shankar Ojha
