Chennai swelters under heat wave condition, vendors make a killing

With the mercury soaring above 41-degree mark, Chennai was reeling under heat wave conditions on Tuesday.

Chennai, May 6 : With the mercury soaring above 41-degree mark, Chennai was reeling under heat wave conditions on Tuesday.

Temperature in and around Chennai was recorded at over 41 degrees Celsius besides humidity-level recorded at 58 per cent.

While the general public can be noticed running for sheds to escape the heat, it is the roadside vendors who are all smiles, as they are doing a brisk business by selling fruits or juices.

"Trade was rather low but now for three days the business is sizzling. Demand for fruit juices and water melon is increasing," said Nabin, a juice shop owner.

Locals prefer to stay indoors to escape the sweltering heat wave conditions.

"It's very hot in Chennai. It's better to stay indoors these days. We, somehow, manage to cool ourselves with cold drinks and umbrellas," said Abila, a resident.

Meteorological experts say that over the years, the average temperature has been rising due to global warming.
