New Delhi, May 23 : The four Left parties are meeting here this afternoon to finalise their strategy on issues such as price rise, runaway inflation and agrarian crisis and the US-India civilian nuclear deal.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party are expected to undertake a comprehensive review of the UPA Government's policies and to decide on ways to carry forward their opposition to them.
The Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas has said the Left parties will also discuss how to respond to the India-specific safeguards agreement, which the government has finalized.
CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat has said prospects of operationalising the nuclear deal were fading away and a desperate attempt was being made to urge the government to go ahead with the deal ignoring the Left's opposition.
On May 6, the UPA-Left joint committee on the India-US nuclear deal had in-depth discussions on the India specific Safeguards Agreement between India and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Senior Congress Leader Pranab Mukherjee had said that the Left parties have sought further clarifications on it, which will be provided in the next few days.
Biswas had said that the government wanted the Committee to give a go-ahead for the approval of safeguards agreement at the IAEA's Board of Governors meet.
