Family members of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) employees on Saturday took to the streets in Srinagar to protest against the State Governments apathy towards them and demanded immediate disbursal of their salaries.
Srinagar, Mar 8 : Family members of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) employees on Saturday took to the streets in Srinagar to protest against the State Government's apathy towards them and demanded immediate disbursal of their salaries.
The protestors said that a nationwide protest would be staged on March 12 to support the SRTC employees.
They condemned the highhandedness of the State Government and its failure to solve their problems and using force on them.
The protest took an ugly shape once again as the police tried to stall the march and had to use force and baton charged the protesters to disperse them.
"The employees of SRTC are being subjected to atrocities. We are protesting against this. Their demands are justified, their salaries are long due but the government is not doing anything. So, we are protesting under the 'Joint Action Committee," said Rama Shri Yadav, Secretary, All India roads workers federation.
Fayaz Shubnum, senior vice president of the employee's joint commission, said: "The police fired teargas at them. Till all the issues are not resolved, we shall protest. We shall shed every drop of our blood for the cause."
The state owned Transport Corporation is considered a white elephant due to its poor performance over the years, suffering losses.
The employees blame the government for the poor state of affairs in the state owned corporation.
According to the employees and their families, the state government has not provided funds for maintenance of old vehicles since 1989.
The employees have requested the state government to provide a special package of two billion rupees to revive the Corporation.
