Kanpur, Mar 30 : Coming down heavily on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, the Congress Party on Sunday accused her Government of corruption, and said that transparent administration could not be expected from the State Government.
"To expect transparency and corruption-free administration from the present Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Government is useless. Going by the past record of present chief minister Mayawati, it is very much clear how importance was given to corruption in the state. No department is free from corruption," the state unit of the party said in its resolution on the first day of its two-day convention of the Pradesh Working Committee.
Talking about frequent transfer of top officials in the state, the resolution said that in just ten months of the present government a "record" number of civil and police officials were shifted.
Union Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal said that the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre has initiated a number of welfare schemes for the public, but they have not reached the masses.
"We want the congress to come back into power not only in the Centre, but also in the state with full majority. We want to see Rahul Gandhi as the next Prime Minister," a senior leader of the Uttar Pradesh Youth Congress, Rohit Kohli said.
"Today one SP leader has said that the Congress does not have any existence in UP. I ask them how much existence do they have in other parts of the country. They are just confined to one state, how can they fight with us," said state unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh said the party was not alone responsible for the price rise and urged the people to compare the prices of items with the previous NDA Government.
The convention that is being held after 26 years assumes its significance as it is organised ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The party is trying hard to regain its power in the state.
According to eyewitnesses, disappointment was conspicuous among the Congress party workers, as their general secretary Rahul Gandhi was not able to attend the convention on the first day.
Both Rahul and Congress president Sonia Gandhi would address the convention tomorrow, sources said.
