Hard drives, like our lives, are easily cluttered with bits of information scattered haphazardly all over the disk. This is fragmentation, and all of us have this condition to some degree -- both in life and in our computer. Defrag corrects this condition by putting in order. A defragged computer runs smoother and faster.
"We may have helped popularize the term," says Diskeeper (www.diskeeper.com) spokesperson Colleen Toumayan. "It's a positive sign when it becomes culturally cool to use a term like 'defrag' in more creative ways. It is a very descriptive word. I mean, we've all been there, right?"
A few years ago, Diskeeper was a clue on the television show "Jeopardy!," the category "Words beginning with d-e-f," the clue "Diskeeper is software to do this." The correct response: "What is defragment?"
Now, after millions of users, the word has gone from a game show clue to common banter. Considering the popularity of the product, it's little wonder that the term "defrag" is working its way into the public's collective conscious.
