Journalists in Manipur defy rebels threat

Journalists in Manipur have defied the rebels diktats as the vernacular press and local channels decided to resume operations after closing down for a week following threats from a banned outfit.

Imphal, Mar 28 : Journalists in Manipur have defied the rebels diktats as the vernacular press and local channels decided to resume operations after closing down for a week following threats from a banned outfit.

The offices of many newspapers and ISTV channel were shutdown on March 21 after threats to four journalists from Omar Farooque's faction of the People's United Liberation Front (PULF).

"Activists of PULF have demanded that unless newspapers rescind their decision not to publish handouts of PULF within three days, they will kidnap media persons and office bearers until and unless the union's decision is changed," said Jinen Singh, General Secretary of All Manipur Working Journalist Union.

"Union is sitting for a joint meeting along with All Manipur Working Journalists Union and all editors of Manipur papers and decided to stop publication," said Jinen.

The journalists decided to resume operations forthwith and boycott the PULFarooque faction.

For decades, Manipuris have complained their state has been equally far from the consciousness of rulers, accusing them of neglecting development and imposing the will of the Central Government.
