Distinguished scientist Limaye passes away

KU Limaye (62), a distinguished scientist and former Chief Controller (research and development) at the DRDO, passed away at Bangalore after a brief illness.

New Delhi, Mar 28 : KU Limaye (62), a distinguished scientist and former Chief Controller (research and development) at the DRDO, passed away at Bangalore after a brief illness.

Limaye, who died on Wednesday, was with the DRDO for more than 38 years and held prestigious positions in the organisation.

He had been appointed Chief Controller of (ECS) on March 1, 2005. Limaye was born on August 17, 1946.

He obtained BE from IISc, Bangalore in 1968 and MTech from IIT, Kharagpur in 1976.

Limaye joined DRDO in 1968 and served at LRDE, Bangalore, till September 1996.

He also served as Director, Microwave Tube Research and Development Centre (MTRDC), Bangalore during 1996-2003.

He took over additional charge as Director, Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), Bangalore in April 2002 and was there till March 31, 2004.

His work has led to significant achievements in self-reliance in advanced Radar Systems and Travelling Wave Tubes for Radars and Electronic Warfare Systems.

Dr Limaye's areas of work include technologies such as radar system design, electronically scanned phased array, airborne radars, microwave antennas and travelling wave tubes.

Limaye was recipient of DRDO Scientist of the Year Award, JC Bose Memorial Award and IRSI Award.

He was also Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Member IEEE, and Associate of National Institute of Advanced Studies.

Limaye is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
