Fragmentation Causes Additional IT Overtime Costs

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

IT managers have so many tasks to do it seems like they put in overtime every week. A new server needs to be installed, the database program needs to be updated, three new OS patches need to be deployed on all computers, in addition to answering every helpdesk call and fixing all the little disasters across the company. But there is one situation that is the hidden source of a lot of overtime that may be the easiest to be solved, file fragmentation.

File fragmentation occurs on every computer. As files are created, they are stored in the available free space on the hard drive. As files are edited or deleted they change in size and no longer fit into the same free space. So, they are broken up and scattered across the disk. As you continue to work, files get more and more fragmented. This begins to slow the computer as it tries to access all the tiny pieces to create one file. Fragmentation also slows boot-up times and can cause the computer to hang or crash. Many employees make helpdesk calls asking, "Why is my computer so slow," most of the time the answer it is file fragmentation.

In the past, IT professionals had to manually defragment each computer in the company one by one on their own time. They spent nights and weekends on this simple, but time consuming task causing them to put in extra overtime hours and costing the company a lot of extra money. What many IT professionals do not know is this simple task can be automated.

Today automatic defragmentation software can be deployed across the network to solve the fragmentation problem and allow the IT personnel to spend their time on more important things.

Automatic defrag software like Diskeeper 2008(www.diskeeper.com) has the capability to run in the background on only idle resources so it never interrupts users on the system.

By installing a fully automatic solution across their networks, companies will provide their users with the reliability, speed and job proficiently computers were intended to provide. Companies will reap the benefits of regaining precious IT time, reduced helpdesk calls, faster computers and the bottom line, money saved.
