Senior Communist leader A B Bardhan has been unanimously re-elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) for the fourth consecutive term on the concluding day of the four-day 20th National Congress here today.

Hyderabad, Mar 27 : Senior Communist leader A B Bardhan has been unanimously re-elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) for the fourth consecutive term on the concluding day of the four-day 20th National Congress here today.

Earlier, Bardhan had expressed his wish to the party's National Congress to step down from his post to give way to the younger generation. But the party rejected it.

The Party Congress also revived the post of Deputy General Secretary after a gap of nine years and appointed S Sudhakar Reddy, MP from Nalgonda (Andhra Pradesh), on the post. D Raja would continue as the national secretary.

Bardhan said new National Council with 125 full members and 13 candidate members have been elected. There are 30 new faces.

The Congress also elected a nine-member secretariat comprising Bardhan, Reddy, D Raja, Gurudas Dasgupta, Nandagopal Bhattacharya, C K Chandrappan, Shameem Faizi, Atul Kumar Anjan and Amarjeet Kaur.
