The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of India (CPI) to be held here from Sunday, is likely to discuss all thorny issues responsible for the Lefts growing tensions with the Congress-led UPA Government.The four-day event will see over 1,000 delegates, including guests from 30 countries, deliberating on key issues such as the U.S.-India civil nuclear cooperation deal, the price rise, the agrarian crisis and problems relating to the unorganized sector, besides developing strategies for the 2009 general elections.
Hyderabad, Mar 23: The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of India (CPI) to be held here from Sunday, is likely to discuss all thorny issues responsible for the Left's growing tensions with the Congress-led UPA Government.The four-day event will see over 1,000 delegates, including guests from 30 countries, deliberating on key issues such as the U.S.-India civil nuclear cooperation deal, the price rise, the agrarian crisis and problems relating to the unorganized sector, besides developing strategies for the 2009 general elections.
CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters, "We would discuss in the meeting one of the most important aspects, the negative fallout of the Indo-US nuclear deal as we are strongly opposed to it. We would also discuss about the sharp differences in the party over Telangana issue and would come to final conclusion. It is not surprising that there are different views on the issue."
Another major task before the CPI Congress is to draw up plans to strengthen the party in the northern states so that it could play a greater role in national politics.
Bardhan said, "Unless we enlarge our base in Hindi belt, we cannot expect to play major role at national level."
This is the third time that Andhra Pradesh is hosting the CPI's National Congress, the two previous occasions being 1975 and 1992.
"A mere coming together of some political parties at the time of elections does not immediately make Third Front. It has to emerge through common people's struggle," Bardhan said.
On the sidelines of the Congress, the party is organising seminars on various political, social and economic issues. The event will conclude on March 27 with a public meeting at Nizam Grounds here.
