Chittorgarh and Tonk peaceful, curfew on

The situation in Rajasthans Chittorgarh and Tonk Districts, which witnessed communal tension on Saturday, was peaceful on Sunday, police said.

Jaipur, Mar 23 : The situation in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh and Tonk Districts, which witnessed communal tension on Saturday, was peaceful on Sunday, police said.

Curfew, however, is still on in Chittorgarh, they added.

Tension started in the town on Saturday, over a minor argument between members of two communities after one group burnt down a motorcycle of another group.

"The situation in the town was by and large peaceful since Saturday evening. However, as a precautionary measure there has been no relaxation in curfew," said Chittorgarh Superintendent of Police Mahesh Goyal.

He further added that no arrests have been made in the incident so far.

According to sources, senior district officials are closely reviewing the situation.

Police said at least 18 persons, including five policemen, were injured and dozen shops torched by an angry mob.

Police had to fire rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the clashing groups after the incident. Curfew was subsequently imposed in the town.

Police said the situation in Tonk city was also peaceful today. The situation took ugly turn on Saturday when during a Holi procession at Heera Chowk, youths of one community allegedly used abusive language against the other.
