Chandigarh, Mar 21 : An alarming increase in the number of stray animals has made the government and social organisations to sit up and take stringent action to remedy the situation. In Chandigarh, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was set up in 1984 to prevent and suppress cruelties inflicted on animals.
Running a dozen of centres throughout the country, the motto of charitable organization is to heal and rehabilitate the pets and spread awareness among people.
"Earlier, the people were not very supportive, but slowly their interest has grown, and an awareness increased to the extent to provide food for animals through donations. The society has been given powers under Section 34 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to detect various cruelties and also to produce them in a court of law," said Mahender Dogra from the Society.The Society runs a hospital-cum-rehabilitation centre where ownerless sick or injured and disabled animals are provided treatment, food, shelter and loving care till they have fully recovered. Some of them are rehabilitated in suitable homes. Veterinary surgeons are available for any emergency.
"Problems of dogs are usually skin-related or injuries sustained in hit-and-run cases. Whenever an accident case is brought to us, we put the injured on life saving drugs. After the animal stablises, we put him under specialised treatment depending on the nature of the problem," said Dr. Singla, a veterinary surgeon.
