Supreme Court upholds Meghalaya Governors decision to invite Congress

The Supreme Court on Wednesday denied to intervene into the matter of Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu decision to invite the Congress Party to from the next government in the state.

New Delhi, Mar 12 : The Supreme Court on Wednesday denied to intervene into the matter of Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu decision to invite the Congress Party to from the next government in the state.

The apex court also declined a plea to prepone the floor test in the Meghalaya Assembly.

On Monday, Sidhu administered the oath to Congress leader D D Lapang as the Chief Minister and asked him to prove majority within ten days.

Meanwhile, seven ministers of the D D Lapang Government, including three independents took oath this afternoon.

Sidhu's decision to invite Lapang was challenged in the Supreme Court by former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A Sangma.

Sangma had claimed that the NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) had the support of 31 of the 60 elected members, whereas the Congress had not been able to cobble up a majority.

The Congress won 25 seats in the 60-member Assembly and sought the support of three independent MLAs.

The MPA had paraded 30 MLAs twice before the Governor and also staked its claim.
