1,300 cases pending against legislators

Around 1,300 cases are pending against sitting Members of parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in various courts of the country according to statistics given by Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj.

New Delhi, Mar 10 : Around 1,300 cases are pending against sitting Members of parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in various courts of the country according to statistics given by Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj.

He gave this information in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Monday stating that the figures as on March 31, 2007, is gathered by a department-related parliamentary standing committee.

The CBI is investigating around 65 such cases.

All State Governments and Union Territories were asked to provide the information to the committee.

States and UTs have provided the committee the information, according to which around 1,300 cases are pending against sitting MPs and MLAs in various courts, Bhardwaj said.
