Manipur shopkeepers down shutters over extortion demands

Shopkeepers in Manipur recently downed their shutters to protest the extortion demands of militant groups.

Imphal, Mar 10 : Shopkeepers in Manipur recently downed their shutters to protest the extortion demands of militant groups.

According to reports, several underground groups had demanded hefty amounts of cash every month from small shopkeepers as protection money."The extortion racket indulged in by militant outfits has caused deep suffering and trauma. It has created a complex situation where we can't lead a normal family life or live in peace. There is constant tension," said Ph. Nanao Singh, a shopkeeper.

It is not just business establishments, but also educational institutions that are being targeted by the militants.

Last week, militants hurled a grenade and fired bullets at the residence of the Finance Officer of Manipur University for monetary gain from construction activities on the campus.

Protestors underlined the need for a concerted and joint struggle against all underground groups."We don't want such violence and are seriously concerned over the current state of affairs," said Mani Devi, a resident.
