NHRC to Jharkhand Govt: Pay 50,000 rupees more to medical negligence victim kin

The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Jharkhand Government to pay an additional monetary relief of 50,000 rupees to the next of kin of a woman who died at a health centre due to doctors negligence.

New Delhi, June 5 : The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Jharkhand Government to pay an additional monetary relief of 50,000 rupees to the next of kin of a woman who died at a health centre due to doctor's negligence.

The Commission's move came on a complaint received from Sheela Sinha and others, from Japala in Palamu district of Jharkhand.

As per the complaint, 32-year-old Asha Devi died due to negligence of doctors in the health centre during an operation.

Following this, the commission called for an Action Taken Report from the Chief Secretary, Jharkhand.

Pursuant to the directions of the Commission, Secretary, Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Department, Jharkhand sent a detailed report that said that 131 patients were operated on that day. Proper check up of the victim was also done before the operation.

However, the doctors could not save her despite all their efforts.

The report further added that the next of kin of the deceased had been paid 50,000 rupees as interim relief by the CMO, Palamu.

An inquiry conducted by the then Chief Medical Officer, Palamu also said that the death was an accident.

The Commission after considering all the reports was of the view that a young lady had lost her life during the operation.

The Commission further said though a compensation of 50,000 rupees had been paid yet it was not sufficient and recommended that the State Government should pay another 50,000 rupees to the next of kin of the deceased and submit a compliance report.
