Welfare of farmers top priority of UPA: Sonia Gandhi

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday asserted that welfare of farmers and common man is the top priority of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

Ahmadnagar (Maharashtra), June 19 : Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday asserted that welfare of farmers and common man is the top priority of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

Gandhi is on a two-day visit to Maharashtra.

Addressing a rally at Loni in Ahmadnagar district of Maharashtra today, she described the decision of waiving the farmers' loan as revolutionary one, which no non-Congress Government has taken so far.

She also said that the Government is taking all efforts to control the rising prices.

Later addressing a party rally at Goregaon in Mumbai Gandhi criticised Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for targeting the people from Northern India.

She said such forces must be defeated for maintaining the unity and integrity of the country. Exhorting the Congress party workers to forge a united front to take on the divisive forces, Gandhi said the Congress party should be strengthened at the grass root level.

Gandhi also visited Shirdi and offered prayers at the shrine of Sai Baba.

She will also attend a dinner meeting at Sahaydri guest house in Mumbai hosted by the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and PCC chief Prabha Rau for MLAs, MPs, ministers, state office-bearers and district unit presidents.
