Womens League of Burma observe 63rd birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi with a peace march in New Delhi on Thursday, and urged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to put pressure on the military regime of Myanmar for the quick release of their leader.

Yangon/New Delhi, June 19 : Women's League of Burma observe 63rd birthday of Aung San Suu Kyi with a peace march in New Delhi on Thursday, and urged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to put pressure on the military regime of Myanmar for the quick release of their leader.

About 150 students from Myanmar wearing red headbands and carrying banners and posters of Aung San Suu Kyi, chanted for the return of democracy to Myanmar and the freedom of their leader.

A democracy icon and Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for most of the last 18 years.

The members of the Women's League of Burma pressed that the government of India should urge Myanmar junta to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi as she turns 63 under house arrest.

"Aung San Suu Kyi who is still in jail and today she will be completing 12 years and 265 days of her detention. She is still under house arrest so the Burmese people here in India is celebrating her birthday and at the same time we also demand government of India to put pressure on the military regime especially to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners," said Kin, a student from Myanmar.

Suu Kyi's confinement in her lakeside home in Yangon was extended in May, despite international pleas to the generals to end her latest stretch of detention, which began in May 2003.

Myanmar's military junta said last week that Suu Kyi deserved to be beaten like an errant child for threatening national security.

The Nobel peace laureate has now been confined for more than 12 of the past 18 years, with her telephone line cut and visitors severely restricted.
