Dhwajasthambham/Flag Pole covered with gold, a first of its kind in A.P for a Lord Ayyappaa temple will be installed on 11th July by the hereditary Chief Priest of Sabarimala Brahmasri Kandaru Rajeevaru Thanthri
Hyderabad, July 08.....:The Legend of Lord Ayyappan, the diety worshipped by one and all irrespecitve of religious sects one belongs to. It is a religion of all religions, the quintessence of the best spoken moral, ethical, social and ethnological codes hitherto known.
THE NUMBER of Ayyappan devotees visiting Sabarimala seems to be increasing by the thousands from year to year; but about 30 years ago, only a few hundred devotees would undertake the arduous trek to the shrine, during Makara Sankranti in mid-January. In fact, the shrine was open to pilgrims, only during that time of the year. Today, the shrine is open every month (for five days), although the Mandalam-Makaravilakku period (November 16 to January 14) remains the most auspicious time to pay a visit. And you see that all through the year Ayyappan devotees are busy preparing for visits to Sabarimala. Sabarimala is a pilgrim centre visited by most pople whose number now put is about 5 crore in just 60days of the year.
Sabarimala is believed to be the place where Ayyappan meditated after killing the powerful demon, Mahishi.Sabarimala is one of the most visited piligrim centres in the world with an estimated 4.5 - 5 crores devotees coming every year. The world's second largest annual pilgrimage, after Haj in Mecca , is reported to be to Sabarimala.
The pilgrimage to Sabarimala is a singular example of one where pilgrims, without consideration of caste, creed, position or social status, go with one mind and one 'mantra' dreaming constantly of the darshan of the presiding deity at the Holy Sannidhanam. Vehicles can go up to Pampa . Thereafter, pilgrims have to follow a path approximately four kilometres up a steep hill. The path, now fully cemented, with shops and medical aid by the sides, used to be a mere trail through dense forest.
Just as the number of devotees visiting Sabarimala is on the rise, the number of Ayyappa temples is also on the rise including in Andhra Pradesh. Now the ninty per cent replica of Sabarimala Swamy Ayyappan Temple has come up 50 kms away from city at Pochampally. Built by Sri Ayyappa Bhaktha Samajam, the building work which began on 13th July 2004, now comes to an end. The Dhwajasthambham/Flag Pole covered with gold, a first of its kind in A.P will be installed on 11th July by the hereditary Chief Priest of Sabarimala Brahmasri Kandaru Rajeevaru Thanthri on 11th July.
The Prathishta of main deity Lord Ayyappan and Upadevatas Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanian and Lord Nagaraja were performed on 8th July, 2005. The temple
Prathishta was performed by hereditary Chief Priest of Sabarimala, Brahmasri Kandaru Rajeevaru Thanthri. Since then the daily poojas and other functions are conducted by the learned priests as per the Yujurvedic System as prescribed by the Thanthri.
As per Vasthu Sasthra - basis for Hindu temple architecture- temple is the reflection of the human being and has one-to-one functional correspondence with many of the human parts. And it says Dhwajasthambham is located at the place where Stomach is supposed to be. Food for various Gods is offered at Dhwaja sthambham. A special concrete trunk of 32 feet height is erected and cladded with gold covered copper with decoration. Special flags are raised during festivals to mark the occasion.
At the spot below the stomach, is the point, where the waste is thrown out. The sins that devotees leave behind are considered as the waste of the temple, and they are sacrificed at the Bali Peetam (Sacrificial Alter). This temple constructed on the available space strictly following the Vasthu completely in designing the temple and its various points following the human body proportion.
The temple will have yearly Brahmaostovam / annual festival, and Mandalam season festivals. The annual festival will be conducted for six days starting with Kodiettam/Flag hoisting and concluded with Arattu/Holi bath.
