Mixed reactions to UPA Governments trust vote

The trust vote win secured by the UPA Government on Tuesday night has evoked mixed reactions from various quarters.

New Delhi, July 23 : The trust vote win secured by the UPA Government on Tuesday night has evoked mixed reactions from various quarters.

While Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said: "I'm very grateful to the honorable Members of Parliament for having given us such a convincing victory. This will send a message to the world at large that India's head and heart is sound. India is prepared to take its rightful place in the comity of nations," Sushma Swaraj, a spokesperson of the BJP said: "It is true that the government has won today, but this victory is worse than defeat. Because this victory has been obtained by crossing the limits of democracy. In order to get support for itself, the government has broken all the principles of democracy. Infact, politics has lost, suitcase has won. This is a suitcase victory."

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said: "This government has an absolute majority even in a full house. We had a clear majority amongst the members present and voting. This number gives us a confidence to go forward. We will try to reach out and try to get support of some other members who are not opposed to economic reforms, social reforms and try to take the economic reform agenda and social reform agenda forward."

Communist Party of India leader A. B. Bardhan, said, "We are a big force. We will continue with our campaign against the government and it will only intensify further," said A.B. Bardhan, Communist party of India (CPI) leader.

Union Agricultural Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar said: "I'm particularly happy about one thing that India will be able to go further and will establish capability in the area of technology."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati said: "BJP got together with its allies and formed a strategy to save the UPA Government. In the scenario of fall of UPA government, instead of suggesting the formation of an alternate government, pushed ahead for the general elections. It is clear from today's happenings that both these alliances do not want the 'daughter of a dalit' to become the Prime Minister of the country."

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said, "It is a victory of democracy. The majority that we have got today proves what we used to repeatedly say that we will get a majority and also the deal will go through."

"This is not only a victory of UPA and Samajwadi Party. It is a victory of secular forces and a defeat of communist forces. It is a victory of farmers, poor and the youth and unemployed," added Mulayam Singh, president of the Samajwadi Party.

"I think what was important here was what was right for India. I'm very proud that the Prime Minister has done that. I was not worried about the victory or loss, I know that a right decision has been taken and a right decision was taken," said Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary.

The UPA Government won the trust vote by 275 to 256. Nineteen MPs close to be absent or abstained form the voting.
