The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for upgradation of existing roads aimed at improving traffic safety and providing faster movement of vehicles with improved riding quality and time.
New Delhi, July 17 : The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for upgradation of existing roads aimed at improving traffic safety and providing faster movement of vehicles with improved riding quality and time.
The Cabinet gave its approval for upgradation or strengthening of 5,000 km of single or intermediate or two lanes National Highways (NH) to two lanes with paved shoulders under National Highways Development project (NHDP) Phase-IVA at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,950 crore.
The upgradation of 4,000 km of single or intermediate or two lane NHs would be on Build Operate and Transfer (Toll) mode and that of 1,000 km of NHs would be on Build Operate and Transfer (Annuity) mode.
The strengthening of the existing roads will lead to reduction in vehicle operating cost and significant reduction in fuel consumption for the vehicles, resulting in energy conservation.
Such upgradation will provide linkages to other corridors of high density and economic importance. Besides it would pave the way for boosting tourism, easy movement for pilgrims, improved port connectivity, etc.
