Kolkata, Jan 6 : A girl student was shot dead by an armed man in the Vishwa Bharati University campus on Sunday.
The assailant entered the girls' hostel of the university in Shantiniketan and went to the room of Saswati Pal, police said.
After firing from his gun at Saswati, the man turned the gun on himself, police said adding that he is in hospital with critical injuries.
The victim and the youth were rushed to a hospital where the girl was declared dead.
Saswati, 24, was a final year music student and from West Midanpore District's Ghatal.
The victim was staying at the hostel, which is the highly protected area of the campus.
The killing has sparked off protests by the university students, who are saying that the breach of security led to the murder.
This is the third incident of campus killing within a month.
Last week, a student of a government school of Madhya Pradesh's Satna District was shot dead by a senior schoolmate.
In another incident, a 14-year-old student was killed by two of his classmates in Gurgaon.
