Nation celebrates 59th Republic Day

Grand celebrations were held across the country marking the 59th Republic Day on Saturday with several functions being organized all over the country to commemorate the special occasion.

Kerala/ Orissa/ Bihar/Gujarat/West Bengal/, Jan 26, : Grand celebrations were held across the country marking the 59th Republic Day on Saturday with several functions being organized all over the country to commemorate the special occasion.

In Kerala, the State Governor R. L. Bhatia unfurled the Tricolour and took salute during the Republic Day parade held here at the Central Stadium in Trivandrum.

Addressing the Republic Day parade, Governor Bhatia asked the people to re-dedicate themselves to put the State on the path of progress with single-minded pursuit of objectives, clarity of purpose and continuity of goals.

State Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan was also present on the special occasion.

In Orissa, Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare hoisted the national flag and took the salute during the parade at the Republic Day function.

In Bihar, Governor R.S. Gavai unfurled the national flag at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

Addressing the people, Governor Gavai asked the State Government to properly execute the schemes meant for the oppressed section of the society to ensure their participation in the development.

In Jharkhand, Governor Syed Sibte Razi hoisted national flag at a grand function organized at Morhabadi Ground in Ranchi. He also took salute of the parade.

In Rajasthan, Governor S.K. Singh hoisted the flag and took salute from a parade of State police, National Cadet Corps (NCC) and schoolchildren. He honoured at least 48 persons and institutions for their excellent work in various fields.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia was also present during the function.

In Gujarat, Governor Naval Kishore Sharma unfurled the national flag. Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet colleagues along with several dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

In West Bengal, the main parade that was being organised at a Rade Road in Kolkata, had to be cut short due to inclement weather.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi unfurled the national flag. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his cabinet colleagues were also present on the occasion.

In Andhra Pradesh, Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari hoisted the national flag and took the salute during the Republic Day ceremonies in Hyderabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Tiwari gave a call for concerted efforts from the Government and public to prevent all types of terrorist activities in the state.

In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Republic Day ceremony was held at the Netaji Stadium in Portblair, where Lieutenant General Bhupinder Singh unfurled the national flag.

In Kochi, the Republic Day celebrations of the Southern Naval command began with a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial at the Naval base here. The Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral Sunil K. Damle took salute at the ceremonial parade held at the naval base.
