Kenyas John Kelai wins fifth Mumbai marathon (Lead:)

Kenyas John Kelai won the fifth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday, while Indias Surinder Singh grabbed first position in the male category and Kavita Raut emerged winner in the female category of the Half-Marathon event.

Mumbai, Jan 20 : Kenya's John Kelai won the fifth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday, while India's Surinder Singh grabbed first position in the male category and Kavita Raut emerged winner in the female category of the Half-Marathon event.

The 30-year-old runner persevered in hot and humid conditions to cover the 42 km course.

Finland's Utrenin Jutsi was the first runner up while Ram Singh Yadav, finished first among Indians in the 42-km run.

Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul flagged off the marathon. Over 33,000 participants from 34 countries took part in the race that carried prize money of one million dollars.

Besides the 42-km Sunday Marathon, there are other events also in the 21-km-long Half-Marathon category, which includes a Senior Citizens` Run, Wheel Chair Event and the 6-km-long "Dream" run.

Actors Soha Ali Khan, Arshad Warsi, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak and Mumbai Police Commissioner D N Jadav were also present on the occasion. Business tycoon Anil Ambani added more celebrity power to the event.

"We should encourage those who are participating in this race. Being the brand ambassador of this marathon all I can say is that this is running for the spirit of Mumbai," said John Abraham.
