Security tightened at Sabarimala

Security has been tightened at the shrine of Lord Ayyappa on Sabarimala Hills two days ahead of Makaravilakku festival, which marks the end of the pilgrimage season.

Kochi, Jan 12 : Security has been tightened at the shrine of Lord Ayyappa on Sabarimala Hills two days ahead of 'Makaravilakku' festival, which marks the end of the pilgrimage season.

About 3000 police personnel, including 200 personnel from commandos and bomb squad have been sent at the temple complex and at the base camp Pampa.

Monitoring devices like scanners, metal detectors and hidden cameras have also been installed to keep an eye on miscreants.

To keep the crowd in control on the occasion of 'Makaravilakku' on January 14 when a huge rush of devotees is expected to visit the temple, a crowd-management plan has been designed, Inspector General Arun Kumar Sinha said.

Restrictions would be imposed on the trekking to the temple from the afternoon of January 14 to ensure a smooth passage for the procession carrying "holy jewel" to be adorned on the Lord's idol.
