Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, today visited a village school in Punjab, and handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh (Rs. 5 million) for upgradation of the school.
Dhilwan (Punjab), Jan 12 : Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, today visited a village school in Punjab, and handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh (Rs. 5 million) for upgradation of the school.
On Friday, Blair's Loomba Trust (UK) signed a pact with the Punjab Government for upgrading the infrastructure of Government Senior Secondary School in Dhilwan in Punjab's Kapurthala District.
Cherie Blair, the President of the Loomba Trust, and KBS Sidhu, the Principal Secretary School Education, Punjab Government, signed the MoU in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The MoU envisages improving the school's infrastructure on a fifty-fifty sharing basis.
"We are putting specific money into this school in order to improve sanitation and water facilities. This school has no toilets and we hope we will build some proper functioning toilets," Cherie Blair said.
The objectives of the Loomba Trust are to promote welfare of poor widows, and education of children, particularly those orphaned due to natural disaster.
