Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh as the Samajwadi Party workers continued to stage protests in various parts of the State against the arrest of the former Uttar Pradesh chief Mulayam Singh Yadavs son and brother.
Allahabad/Varnasi, Jan 10 : Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh as the Samajwadi Party workers continued to stage protests in various parts of the State against the arrest of the former Uttar Pradesh chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's son and brother.
Ravindra Yadav, district head of Samjawadi Part's Yuvan Sabha, said their protest was against the arrest of party's youth-wing president Akhilesh Yadav and party's state chief Shivpal Yadav's and the police action on the party workers in Safai, Etawah district.
Protesters took to the streets condemning the state government for the recent violence in the State.
In Allahabad, scores of Samjawadi Party workers took out a protest march and raised slogans against Chief Minister Mayawati.
They also burnt an effigy of Mayawati.
Meanwhile, violence was reported in Varanasi when members of Samajwadi Chatra Dal, the Samajwadi Party's student-wing, congregated to stage a demonstration against a reported State government decision to close three state-run colleges following violence in the town.
The police resorted to baton charge in an attempt to stop the demonstration of the party workers. Protesters burnt vehicles and damaged properties.
Several towns in Uttar Pradesh have been reeling under violence since Wednesday.
One person was killed, while two others were seriously injured in police firing when workers of the Samajwadi Party took to the streets protesting against the arrest of their leaders Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav.
Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, the brother and the son of Mulayam Singh, respectively, were arrested when they went to the residence of a top police official to resolve the dispute arising out of the arrest of leaders of the SP's student-wing.
The police had earlier detained around 150 people after the clashes in Etawah.
The trouble had started on Tuesday when students belonging to the Samajwadi Chatra Dal tried to give a memorandum - seeking restoration of elections in degree colleges of the State -- to the State ministers.
When the police prevented the workers from meeting the ministers, the mob reportedly turned unruly.
