Chennai, Jan.1 : New Year revelry left at least one person dead and six others severely injured when a wooden makeshift dais that was built on a swimming pool for dancing in a hotel came down crumbling on Monday night.
There were about 600 people present for the New Year celebrations at the Savera Hotel when the incident occurred.
The hotel administration claimed to have called up fire services and the police immediately after the mishap.
Priya Ravi Chandren, the Divisional Fire Officer in Chennai, said that the temporary dias installed at the swimming pool had weak support due to which it collapsed under the weight of many people.
Six people were saved from drowning, he added.
Police are investigating the incident. No formal complaint against the hotel has been filed yet.
