Mr. John McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr Aminur Rahman, Consul General and Trade Commissioner (South India) and Mr Ramakrishna Dastarla, Business Development Manager, Austrade, were part of a delegation who visited the recently inaugurated George Institute for International Health - India today. The delegation acknowledged the new Institute's aim to improve population health and health systems in India.
In India, The George Institute has partnered with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the University of Sydney and is developing collaboration across health/medical research, teaching and applications to identify solutions to major health problems through research, translation of research findings into policy & practice and capacity building. In 2008, the Institute will conduct studies into the health system, HIV/AIDS, road safety, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, population health metrics and impact evaluation of health interventions.
In a congratulatory message, Mr. McCarthy said, "We congratulate The George Institute for its commendable work the world over. It has recently expanded its presence in India and will offer its rich expertise in health research and population health to boost important health programmes in the country." He added, "It has played a major part in the recent rapid growth in scientific and technological cooperation between India and Australia".
In a video message from Sydney, Prof. Lalit Dandona, Senior Director, The George Institute, India, shared details of various ongoing projects and added, "It's a very proud moment for all of us at The George Institute to have Mr. John McCarthy and his delegation visit our premises. We at The George Institute and our project partners look forward to their continuous support, encouragement and guidance to help us achieve our goal of improving population health in India."
