'Youth Dialogue on Climate Change' was organized by TERI and Canadian High Commission at Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The objective of this special event, where more than 80 students from 22 colleges participated, was to sensitize the youth on issues related to climate change and sustainable development and further to encourage constructive dialogue, discussions and network between youth.
The event was graced by special guests - Mr Adrian Norfolk, Counsellor, Political & Economic Affairs, Canadian High Commission, Dr. Djordjija Petkoski, Programme Leader, PSD & Corporate Governance, World Bank Institute and Ms Tiahoga Ruge, Special Advisor on Sustainable Development, Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico.
Youth is an important segment of the society as the future lies in their hands. But Ms Tiahoga Ruge, commented that there is a dearth of youth who are aware of this pressing issue and carry it forward. Ms Ruge endorsed what Ms Debopriya Sarkar, Indraprashtha College said " each one teach one".
It seems an important step to apprise our youth about what is actually happening at a global scenario on policy issues related to climate change. As Rohit Pathania from Delhi College of Engineering has rightly said this is the time to "think globally and act locally". Mr Ghislain Chaput, Head, Public Affairs, Canadian High Commission felt this to be the key message of today.
One of the key focus areas to combat this pressing problem is to lay emphasis on education, training and awareness building amongst all segments of the society. Mr. Adrian Norfolk said "a major step in this direction has been the launch of the Canada-India Environment Forum including green technology development to strengthen the relationship on environmental cooperation".
The youth debated whether "Government leadership, A proactive civil society, Public awareness and action, or Clean Technologies" is the most critical factor in addressing the global challenge of climate change. The winners Divya Kannan, B.A. History (Hons), III year student, Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, Shuchi Swami, B.A.L.L.B., II year student, University School of Law & Legal Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, and Upali Sarkar, B.Sc. Botany (Hons), II year student, Miranda House, University of Delhi were felicitated by Mr Ghislain Chaput, Head, Public Affairs, Canadian High Commission.
