The 2nd India Japan Energy Forum was organized by TERI and NEDO from 4 to 5 February at Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. Nearly 200 participants including around 70 from Japan participated in this high profile event. Mr Yoshitaka Shindo, Senior Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (MITI), Japan, and Mr V Subramanian, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India inaugurated the Forum along with Dr RK Pachauri Director General TERI and Chairman IPCC.
Given the importance of energy conservation, the deliberations focused on different technological options for improving energy efficiency in the industry, power and commercial buildings sector as well as on promoting renewable energy technologies in different end use sectors.
Dr R K Pachauri, Director General, TERI and Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stressed the need for undertaking detailed studies on technological gaps that exist in Indian industrial sectors like iron & steel, cement, chemicals and fertilizers as well as in the power sector and identify technological collaborative opportunities between India and Japan. He stressed that the focus should be on current energy conservation policies in India and Japan, Technological options for efficiency improvements in industry, Technological options for promoting renewable energy, and Technological options for promoting energy efficiency in buildings.
Representatives from India and Japan presented the industry status, energy consumption trends and energy efficiency improvement possibilities in different energy intensive industry sectors like iron and steel and cement. Representatives from Japanese industries like Kobe Steel, Nisshin Steel, Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, Kyocera Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) presented technological options that can be adopted for improving the efficiency of operation. Specific interest was on technologies like regenerative burners in steel sector, waste heat recovery options in the cement sector, use of heat pumps for heating/cooling applications and ultra super critical technology for power generation.
The forum provided an excellent platform for knowledge sharing amongst government officials, industry representatives, technology suppliers and support institutions on energy efficient technologies and policy frameworks to promote energy conservation.
Highlighting the example of the joint venture that has recently been established for manufacture of supercritical steam turbines between Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited of India and MHI from Japan, Mr Virendra Gupta, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Govt of India emphasized the need for the Japanese companies to increase their exposure in the Indian energy sector.
Other important speakers at the event included Mr Seiji Murata, Chairman, NEDO and Mr Tomofumi Hiraku, Director General, METI.
