If elected Democrats may revise Indo-US nuke deal

The Democratic Party may revise the much-touted Indo-US civil nuclear deal if it comes into power in America, according to a senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations of USA.

New Delhi, Feb 4 : The Democratic Party may revise the much-touted Indo-US civil nuclear deal if it comes into power in America, according to a senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations of USA.

Speaking at a session on "After Bush: The Collapse of Bipartisanship and the Implications for US Foreign Policy" organized by The Aspen Institute India here, Senior Fellow Charles Kupchan felt that the Democrats may go ahead with the deal, but may link it to India's support on issues such as Iran.

The next US President will be presiding over a deeply divided country, said Kupchan, adding that the President will take office with the most inauspicious set of geopolitical circumstances.

He felt that the US foreign policy would be erratic during this period, as the US will be going through an inward looking phase.

It will look towards other countries such as Europe and India to fill the void that the US will leave behind in many parts of the world, Kupchan added.

Former Ambassador of India to Japan Kuldip Sahdev chaired the meeting.
