Shillong, Feb 26 : Security has been tightened ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's proposed visit to Meghalaya today following the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC)-sponsored 12-hour bandh.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive here by helicopter from Kohima and land at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in Polo Ground at 2 pm today to address an election rally in favour of party candidates for the coming Meghalaya election due on March 3.
AICC General Secretary in-charge of Meghalaya, Margaret Alva and senior party leaders would receive the Prime Minister.
"We have arranged maximum security in the state, especially in Shillong, to foil any subversive activity by militants," a senior police official said.
A multi-tier security cover had been pressed into service to thwart any intention of militants to create trouble during the rally, he added.
The HNLC called a similar bandh on the day of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's visit on February 23, but it evoked little response. The outfit alleged that the ruling Government in New Delhi was not sincere in peace talks with HNLC.
Before leaving for Shilong, Dr.Singh addressed an election rally in Kohima. The assembly polls in Nagaland would be held on March 5.
